Objectives

Individuals with time-limited certificates who have not completed the requirements of the Certificate Maintenance Program at the end of their current certification cycle will not be issued a new certificate. Individuals without current/valid CNM/CM certificates may not be able to continue to practice midwifery depending on their state licensing/ regulating bodies.

The objectives of the Certificate Maintenance Program are to:

  • Keep CNMs/CMs certifications valid and current.
  • Foster critical review of recent advances in midwifery practice.
  • Provide documentation of CNMs/CMs certification status as required to   credetialing/licensing authorities.

Certificate Maintenance Program

Certification for CNMs/CMs with time-limited certificates can be maintained by one of the following methods:

  • Option 1: AMCB Certificate Maintenance Module Method

Successfully complete 3 AMCB Certificate Maintenance Modules during the  five-year certification cycle. The five-year cycle begins with the year of   certification. One module must be completed in EACH of the three areas of   practice: Antepartum; Intrapartum/Newborn; and Postpatum/ Gynecology and   Primary Care of the Well-Women.

    AND

Obtain 20 contact hours (2.0 CEUs) of ACNM or ACCME Category 1   approved continuing education units.

The Certificate Maintenance Modules completed cannot count toward the required 20 contact hours (2.0 CEUs).

  • Option 2: Reexamination Method

Take the current AMCB Certification Examination no sooner than the fourth   (4th) year of the current five-year certification cycle.
    • Once the exam is taken, the CNM/CM may not change to Option 1.
    • The exam must be passed by the end of the fifth (5th) year of the certification cycle.
    • Criteria for passing and retaking the exam will be the same as those in effect for first time candidates at the time the exam is taken.

AND

Obtain 20 contact hours and (2 CEUs) of ACNM or ACCME Category 1  approved continuing education activities.

Credit for Clinical Precepting - AMCB announces that it will accept clinical precepting hours as part of its CEU requirement. CMP participants can earn up to the equivalent of 1.0 CEU (10 contact hours) for precepting SNM and SM students during their certification cycle. Contact hours will be calculated as 9 hours of clinical precepting equals 1 contact hour (0.1 CEU); maximum amount would be 90 hours of precepting. CMP participants should document the Education Program they precept for, dates, and number of hours.

PLEASE NOTE: For CNMs certified prior to January 1, 1996, initial certification cycles in the Certificate Maintenance Program (CMP) are abbreviated. Certification cycle requirements can be found here. Once the initial certification cycle in CMP is complete, all subsequent certification cycles will be for 5 years and CNMs will adopt the cycle requirements above.
