Volunteer Opportunities

The American Midwifery Certification Board, Inc. (AMCB) is a non-profit, voluntary corporation whose mission is to protect and serve the public by providing the certification standard for individuals educated in the profession of midwifery. The AMCB is governed by an eleven (11) member, volunteer Board of Directors (BOD) comprised of:

  • Three officers (president, secretary and treasurer)
  • Four chairpersons of the following standing committees:
    • Certificate Maintenance Program (CMP) Committee
    • Credentials, Administration & Reporting (CAR) Committee
    • Examination Committee
    • Research Committee
  • Three professional members from other health care disciplines
  • A consumer member

Volunteer certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives are needed to serve in BOD level positions and as members of AMCB's committees. Applications for BOD positions should be sent to AMCB headquarters to the attention of the Executive Director, Carrie Bright, CAE.

Qualifications to serve as an officer of AMCB include the following:

  • Be a nurse-midwife/midwife certified by the ACNM or AMCB (formerly ACC)
  • Be members of the ACNM
  • Hold a minimum of a master's degree
  • Have at least 3 years of midwifery experience
  • Have knowledge appropriate to the role and responsabilities
  • Not be simultaneously serving on the ACNM Board of Directors or as a chairperson of any ACNM Division or Committee

All committee appointments are:

  • Made by the BOD on recommendation of the respective committee chairperson.
  • For a three-year (3) term beginning January 1 the year of appointment.
  • Renewable for one second term for a maximum of six (6) years on any one committee.

There are five standing committees of AMCB:

  • Certificate Maintenance Program (CMP) Committee
  • Credentials, Administration & Reporting (CAR) Committee
  • Examination Committee
  • Finance Committee (Chaired by the Treasurer)
  • Research Committee

Qualifications for CNMs/CMs to serve on AMCB's committees include the following:

  • Current certification as a certified nurse-midwife or certified midwife by the ACNM or AMCB (formerly ACC).
  • Submission of a completed application form, including a consent to serve, curriculum vita or resume, and confidentiality affidavit.
  • Other qualifications or expertise specific to the individual committee.

Applications should be submitted to AMCB by mail with 3 copies of all materials by July 1. The application will be sent to the appropriate committee chairperson who will communicate directly with the applicant. The committee chairperson recommends committee appointments to the BOD for approval according to the specific needs of the committee.
